“From the Advertising Industry Corner”

I don’t know exactly what kind of outcomes my efforts could produce, however, there are things that I have given considerable thought to.
These things are also connected to our company management philosophy at Bigbeat: “Have those around us all feel happiness,” so I do not only want to think about it, but also speak and act on it as well.
I will serialize my thoughts so please bear with me.

What I am thinking about is this:

By increasing the freedom and happiness of the people living and working in Tokyo (urban), the places to flourish for the people living and working in the region, like that of my hometown Kochi, will also increase. These efforts will rapidly spread to the rest of the world. How can we bring that future closer to us?
What can Bigbeat do as an advertising company?

I was born and raised in a “prosperous and peaceful Japan,” so I hope to hand over an even more prosperous and even more peaceful future of Japan to the children of the next generation.

Of the countless number of problems within society, the ones that I feel as a businessman that something must be done is due to “the decline of the countryside and the deterioration of the city” and “the low labor productivity of Japanese companies.”
The latter is one of the main factors of why people in the city are getting worn out as well. Meaning, because productivity is low, working hours become long, and additionally urban areas get further worse due to the pain of commuting...
Not long ago, an extremely tragic event occurred at the leading company in our industry, Dentsui.  The people and admen working in the advertising industry believed for over 30 years in the saying “work hard and enjoy life.” ii
The 10 Principlesiii  did not apply just to Dentsu, but the advertising industry as a whole.
“Dentsu is working to those lengths? If we don’t do more, we can’t win! We must work thoroughly and play frugally even in our rest!! That’s the embodiment of the cool, successful adman.” So I had thought.

If I look back at these past 30 years, sure, I have fallen down completely many times, but, personally, I have no regrets.

“If I succeed at work, then it’s fine if I die!” and
“I want to die because of work...”

Although these sentences resemble one another, there is a frightening difference.

“I can die for you”iiii
You would be lucky if you could come across someone like this, however, the situation that many of the businessmen are in aren’t like a comic like this. It’s reality.

A world where we value each person’s life and health is a wonderful world.
If we don’t have that prosperity or that culture, this cannot be realized.
The prosperity and culture in Japan had been previously built up through hard work by our predecessors.

So, how will we create our future?

That is the midst of our dilemma.

While struggling in the Advertising Industry Corner, I will continue to consider and give voice to the question of “What should we do?” in order to change the way we act moving forward.

I believe many others, not only myself, must also feel that if we continue this way, Japan won’t be able to become a brighter and more prosperous place.
